To start the Omnipage Pro application, open the Accessibility Options (A) on the Start Menu and select Omnipage Pro (O).

Alternatively, you can acquire an image from within Microsoft Word by selecting "Acquire Text" from the FILE menu.

Omnipage provides three process types to choose from:

OCR Wizard — a guiding interface for deciding on what kinds of process settings one would like to perform.
  1. AutoOCR —: performs the particular process settings the program is currently configured for.
  2. Manual OCR — a way of adjusting process settings with quick and easy pull- down menus, but is visually intensive.

Note: If you are a blind user, your best bet is to use the AutoOCR option.

To choose a process type, open the Process menu by typing ALT+P, G within the Omnipage Pro application.

[Note: This is a multi-tab dialogue. Use the TAB key to move through the selections and CTRL+TAB to move to the next page.]

Move through the selections in the Process Tab until "Use OCR Wizard" appears. A check mark next to this option indicates that the OCR Wizard is to be used. The absence of a check mark indicates that AutoOCR processing will be performed.

[Note: Use the spacebar to check or uncheck a selection.]

If using the OCR Wizard, the system prompts you for settings before processing. If using the AutoOCR, you may want to change the process settings to meet your needs.

[Note: Process and other settings selected by a previous user remain in effect until the next user changes them.]

Process settings are divided into four parts:

  1. Image Source Options
  2. Zoning Options
  3. OCR Options
  4. Export Options

Image source allows you to select the source of the image to be processed (i.e., what do you want Omnipage to process):

  • Single-column Pages
  • Multiple-column Pages
  • Tables
  • Mixed Pages

[Note: Zoning can also be done manually but requires good vision and hand-eye coordination.]

  • Defer OCR

To choose an OCR option, type ALT+P, G. Type one of the following letters to select your OCR preference:

Export Options

To choose an export option, type ALT+P, G. Type one of the following letters to select your export preference:

  • (V) save as

Scanning can be performed by either manually placing documents directly on the bed of the scanner or by using the Automatic Document Feeder (ADF).

[Note: When using the ADF, be sure of the follwoing:

  • documents are of standard page size
  • Pages are NOT BOUND in any way
  • Pages are free of staples, glue and tape.]

Documents may have print on only one side (single sided) or on both sides (double-sided). YOU must select the type of document to be scanned.

To specify what type of document you have in the ADF, type ALT+T, O. Press CTRL+TAB to move to the Scanner page. Move through the selections in the Scanner Tab until "Double-sided Pages" appears. A check mark next to this option indicates that the pages to be scanned have print on both sides. The absence of a check mark indicates that the pages to be scanned have print on only one side.

[Note: Use the spacebar to check or uncheck a selection.]
