Text Links
ISSUE:
Single word links rarely provide an adequate description of the information to be retrieved. Some screen-reader users may be unable to easily access contextual information related to a link. Links should be clear, descriptive and able to stand alone.
Single word links represent small targets for persons who have difficulty controlling a pointing device. Placing long lists of text-based links close together in rows or columns increases the probability of a mouse error. Enclosing text links in brackets, braces, parentheses or other punctuation can be confusing or distracting to screen-reader users. Links listed horizontally or in a multicolumn fashion should be visually distinct and separated by vertical bars (|) or graphics with appropriate alternative text.
STANDARD:
- Avoid the use of single word links.
- Links shall be clear, descriptive and able to stand alone.
- Preference shall be given to vertical lists of well-spaced text links.
- Links listed horizontally or in a multiple column layout shall be visually distinct and separated by appropriate punctuation or graphics.
- Avoid enclosing text links in brackets, braces, parentheses or other punctuation.
