Functional Accessibility Evaluator

Everyone at the University of Minnesota has access to the Functional Accessibility Evaluator (FAE) developed at the University of Illinois.  FAE provides a detailed report of web accessibility issues across multiple web pages.  It has a comprehensive rule set based on WCAG 2.0 A and AA standards as well as information and links to learn more about each web accessibility issue.

FAE is provided to the University of Minnesota as part of inCommon suite of applications.  It can be accessed by going to https://fae.illinois.edu. When accessing the website for the first time, select University of Minnesota from the drop down list and log in with UMN Internet ID and password. Setting up a scan is done on the "Run FAE" page.  Once the scan is run, the report is presented in the Archived reports page.

Although there is nothing that you have to do as part of CS retirement, it could be helpful to re-create the CS scans in FAE.  Alternatively you can configure FAE scans from scratch. When addressing issues found by FAE it is best used in conjunction with the AInspector Sidebar Firefox extension.  AInspector provides details about each issue and where it appears in the code.

FAE focuses solely on web accessibility issues.  Spell checking and link quality checking features are not available.  Running scans automatically on a set schedule is also not available.

We believe FAE is great software and allows a broad audience insight into the accessibility issues on Web pages. Please don't hesitate to take advantage of it.
